In Germany, the type of license required to sail a boat depends on the size and power of the boat. There are three main types of boat license in Germany:

  • The "Sportbootführerschein Binnen" (inland waters license) is required for boats with an engine power of more than 11.03 kW (15 PS) on inland waters, such as rivers, lakes, and canals.
  • The "Sportbootführerschein See" (coastal waters license) is required for boats with an engine power of more than 11.03 kW (15 PS) on coastal waters, such as the North Sea, Baltic Sea, or German territorial waters.
  • The "Sportküstenschifferschein" (coastal skipper's license) is required for boats over 12 meters in length, or boats with more than 15 PS on coastal waters.
